00:32 – The doctrine of salvation for the dead is revealed in Section 137.

01:44 – Divine curiosity is a catalyst for revelation.

07:37 – Joseph marvels at how Alvin obtained Celestial glory without being baptized. He learns that all who have died without a knowledge of the gospel, who would have received it, shall be heirs of the Celestial Kingdom.

09:47 – No one is denied a blessing because they died before they could receive it.

12:42 – All children that die before the years of accountability are saved in the Celestial Kingdom.

19:39 – After losing dear family members, Joseph F. Smith seeks and receives revelation about the Spirit World.

25:54 – Joseph F. Smith has a marvelous vision of Jesus coming into the Spirit World after he was crucified.

29:15 – Those in the Spirit World see the absence of their bodies as bondage. The body and spirit are very much connected.

33:28 – Coats of light and coats of skins in Genesis 3.21.

34:58 – The great feast in a temple setting as contained in D&C 138 and Isaiah 26. The Saints are invited to rise from the dust and enter into kingship.

45:12 – The Savior organizes the righteous to preach to the spirits in prison, but then he resurrects the righteous. Perhaps the work of saving the dead is for our dispensation.

52:00 – As children of God we are all connected and will continue preaching the gospel in the Spirit World after death.

  1. I noticed in section 137 that the second gathering of Israel is mentioned in verse 6. What or when would you identify the first gathering to have taken place?

  2. A sincere thank you for one year of informative and inspirational study in the Doctrine and Covenants! Wow, I have been richly blessed by listening to your podcast.

    1. Thank you!

  3. The little conundrum you both discussed about Christ commissioning all these righteous to preach in spirit prison and then resurrecting them struck me simply because I’ve never even thought to consider it a conundrum at all. And now I’m intrigued. I assumed those resurrected beings were there teaching away in spirit prison. I know, even in that same section, it is referred to as the world of “spirits”, but it never occurred to me that resurrected beings such as Adam and Moses might not be still living in the same place as those who are dying now (and still awaiting their resurrection). Is this something we know then? That resurrected beings no longer dwell in the same place as the world of spirits? I know I’ve read that the spirit world is here. Another dimension of this earth. Do we know then where resurrected beings go if they aren’t here? Are they off to … nigh unto Kolob or some such? 🙂 For that matter, do we know if premortal spirits dwell in the same place as the spirits of those who have died? I’m fine with speculation. I like pondering and wondering. But if there IS more definitive stuff that we actually do know about resurrected beings no longer dwelling with non resurrected beings and I simply haven’t realized it, I’d love to know!

  4. Thank you so much for these podcasts. They have really helped me in my study of Come Follow Me this year. Institute was always my favorite part of attending the U of U (back in the day). I was blessed to be taught by amazing teachers (S. Michael Wilcox among them). I frequently took several Institute classes each quarter as I loved them so much more than my classes on campus. It is nice to feel like I’m back in Institute again.

I LOVE listening to you and often feel the Spirit strongly as you testify and talk about doctrine. I especially loved your insight as to what our loved ones are doing in the Spirit World. My father passed earlier this year and I have grieved and struggled with the point of his suffering in this life and what purpose it did him just to die painfully in the end. He did live to 75, so it wasn’t an “early” death per se, but he suffered physically for years prior to his death. It just didn’t seem fair since he has been a faithful Latter-day Saint his entire life and I watch others who live “worldly” lives and are in perfect health. Perhaps, my father’s struggles helped him grow spiritually in preparation for his new mission in the Spirit World. It helps me put things in better perspective.

Thank you again for your wisdom and insights. I thoroughly enjoy listening and always learn so much. You are truly blessing lives. Keep up the good work!

    1. Thanks Rachel! The U is a great school! I appreciate your positive comments and wish you all the best.

  5. This podcast has been the Master class I have listened to over and over this past year. Thank you for all your efforts to bring us such a rich experience in studying the Doctrine and Covenants and all those associated with bringing about the Restoration. I have loved every moment of it and look forward to the Old Testament!

  6. Thanks again for the interesting discussion. The thoughts of the work of the dead in the spirit world is very insightful. There is also much work for those who have righteously past away. The temple also has workers from both sides of the veil. Their must be those who have passed away needed to assist the dead when receiving their ordinances. Have you considered just as we the living have an escort on thru the temple, would not the dead have the same? And I do know that my spiritual, righteous, spirit mother does the work she always loved in this life of assisting the women in the temple sealing room to ready them to be the eternal bride. Yes, there is much joyous work to ready God’s people in the temples, by assisting all saints [living & dead] for the great day of our Savior to fully return to our earth!
